Somerton Park

Came across this picture that a friend sent me many years ago. I've no idea when it was taken other than after '81 as that's when we emigrated to Australia. Anyone got any ideas?

Great photo, that. I loved that ground, warts and all.

In all the games I saw at Somerton I never saw one from the vantage point of (whatever the stand was called) opposite the players' tunnel, so even though this is an aerial shot it still gives me a perspective I never had of the stand and terracing opposite.

The pic is bigger now, i could barely see it before. I stood in it often enough, but after seeing the overhead, surely i cant be attacked for saying that's probably the worst looking "stadium" i have ever seen ?

So you think that Somerton was 'lovely' then do you?

I liked the place because it was ours, but it was possibly the biggest dump in football.

I refer you to Bad Boy Bubby's post above.

As mentioned in a fanzine "It was a dump but it was OUR dump" and we loved it.
Strange how mixing present with past how people currently moan about the athletics track, but at Somerton we had a speedway track.
I saw games from all 4 sides, most league games on the Cromwell, Cup games at the Railway and Euro games under the gantry side. That was a strange experience because the pitch was about waste high when stood there.

It might well of been a dump, but it was our dump. Something we have not had since
I may have only followed the county since Bobby Ferguson was manager but Somerton was our ground.

I remember the old syand and club burning down in 1992. The structure had to be pulled down for us to play Barry Town last home game of the 1991-92 season. I'm sure we won :)

Looking at the crowd there not too many there, and the Barry game was usually well supported.

Looking at the crowd the picture is probably from the 1992-93 one of the early games like Tamworth ot Grantham.

Thats my best guess at it.
